This security toolkit draws together the key lessons of the past decade in promoting gender equality in security and justice. Building upon the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Handbook on Effective Police Responses to Violence Against Women, the toolkit shares new and emerging good practices, reflect upon how successes in increasing gender equality have been achieved and move forward thinking about integrating a gender perspective in security and justice sector institutions.
This tool, aimed for police officers at all levels, sets out a vision and strategies to deepen efforts to integrate a gender perspective and advance gender equality in policing. The recommendations for police departments (p. 33) closely aligns with the U.S. Department of Justice Guidance on Identifying and Preventing Gender Bias in Law Enforcement Response to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. This resource also contains case studies on police response to domestic violence that highlight practices in police–civil society partnership for domestic violence training in Kazakhstan (p. 47) and women’s police stations in Brazil and India (p. 49).
