Developed by the Animal Welfare Institute, this Technical Assistance Guidance explores ways that victim advocates can assist survivors of domestic violence and their pets when seeking safety and refuge from abuse.

This webinar describes the linkage between the urgent need to protect domestic violence victims and their pets from further abuse and the comfort that pets can provide, especially in times of stress and trauma.

The Link between violence to people and violence to animals is well documented by research, both nationallyand internationally. In its simplest form: violence to animals is a predictor that the abuser may becomeviolent to people, and vice versa. Abuse is abuse no matter what the form or whom the victim. Crimes against people are tied to a myriad of crimes against animals and threespecific types of animal abuse that are linked to crimes against people are featured in this guidebook: sexualassaults against animals (bestiality), animal hoarding, and animal fighting.

Hundreds of domestic violence shelters are now providing safe pet housing options to enable families to leave abusers without having to make an impossible choice to leave their pets behind and at risk. This resource provides guiding principles for the structure and maintenance of pet support (foster care and on-site housing) directories.

This manual provides simple, how-to methods for starting SAF-T at a domestic violence shelter. SAF-T is available to encourage every domestic violence shelter throughout the United States and other countries to keep people and their pets safe.

This fact sheet offers statistics from several research studies investigating the connection between animal cruelty and human violence, domestic violence, and child abuse.

This study assesses animal maltreatment in samples of women seeking safety at shelters and community samples of women. Women in shelter were much more likely (54%) to report partners' hurting or killing of their pets than women not in shelter (3.5%).
