This webinar explores two common support services for domestic violence survivors that are often not accessible for transgender victims: shelters and support groups. Traditionally, these services have been restricted to non-transgender women or they have been sex-segregated, excluding male survivors (transgender and non-transgender) or individuals who do not identify within the gender binary (as male or female).
A growing number of shelters and support groups affirm that inclusion of survivors of all genders is much easier than some may think. Two 2016 FORGE research studies of shelters and support group facilitators will inform discussion of best practices. Case examples illustrate ways to include transgender and non-binary survivors into needed – and often life-saving – services.
