Report of the inquiry concerning Canada of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women under article 8 of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women received letters from the Feminist Alliance for International Action and a letter from the Native Women’s Association of Canada requesting that the Committee initiate an inquiry under article 8 of the Optional Protocol into alleged grave and systematic violations by the State party of rights set forth in the Convention. Namely, these violations were that aboriginal women and girls experience extremely high levels of violence in Canada, as shown by the high number of disappearances and murders of aboriginal women.

This report includes recommendations the Committee made to the State party, which should have been considered and implemented as a whole, including the recommendations to improve the socioeconomic situation of aboriginal women, in order fully to address the issue of missing and murdered aboriginal women and all other forms of violence that aboriginal women experience
