Some practices in the mental health system may foster unhelpful attitudes or misunderstandings about domestic violence and sexual assault. This presentation provides an overview of the nature of domestic and sexual violence and a general description of community-based advocacy services for survivors. Practitioners will learn about ways to support survivor safety in their practice and the role of safety planning in wellness and recovery plans. A discussion of how to include domestic violence and sexual assault advocates in the recovery planning process shows how partnerships can reduce barriers to services for survivors with mental health related issues.
