On this podcast, Jennifer Grove of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center interviews Kimberly Lonsway, lead author on the VAWnet Applied Research paper: Rape Prevention and Risk Reduction: Review of the Research Literature for Practitioners.

This video interview with SWAN’s Executive Director, a former marine, provides an overview of the challenges faced by female veterans while deployed and after returning to their communities. It also discusses the incidence of Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and the implications of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy”. 

In this presentation, Jenny Dills, the Prevention Coordinator at the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, guided participants through an activity in which they were asked — from a coalition viewpoint — to think about primary prevention as it relates to victim services, secondary services and tertiary services.

"The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults: 1) behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; 2) tobacco use; 3) alcohol and other drug use; 4) sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection; 5) unhealthy dietary behaviors; and 6) physical inactivity. In addition, YRBSS monitors the prevalence of obesity and asthma. YRBSS includes a national school-based Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted by CDC and state and local school- based YRBSs conducted by state and local education and health agencies. This report summarizes results from the 2009 national survey, 42 state surveys, and 20 local surveys conducted among students in grades 9-12."

From October 27-29, 2009, a working group of expert researchers, policymakers, and practitioners met to review the current state of evidence and practice in developing and implementing interventions and strategies to address the intersections of violence against women and HIV. The meeting aimed to make policy and programmatic recommendations for national and international HIV/AIDS programs and develop an agenda for future program development, evaluation and research efforts. This report summarizes the presentations, discussions and recommendations from the meeting.
