In the Kimberley they hung 52 white dresses on crosses. In Coogee, Sydney, hundreds left their footprints in the sand. Around the country, in thousands of gestures, Australians marked the 12th annual White Ribbon day, remembering women killed by their partners in 2015, swearing next year would see change.

There is a strong connection between domestic abuse and HIV. According to the CDC [PDF 1,824 KB], an estimated one in three women in the U.S. experiences domestic abuse – but researchers estimate that 1 in 2 women living with HIV experience intimate partner violence (IPV).

Even though Domestic Violence Awareness month was in October, organizations across Hampton Roads continue to shed light on the ongoing problem. Among them is the Caribbean People Organization, which invited women from a local shelter to participate in an event called Appetite for Awareness.

Aria Health on Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia now has an in-house domestic violence counselor to help patients who are dealing with this issue. Supervisor Marcella Slick said doctors are much more likely to ask patients about domestic violence when they can connect them to help.
