County and federal officials Tuesday focused on domestic violence locally and nationally by reminding Houstonians that help is available over the holidays, including the filing of protective orders, which is a free service.

At almost the same time Tuesday, the Department of Justice was announcing parts of a broader effort by the federal government to improve how law enforcement handles cases of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Lynch’s initiative includes millions in federal grants to reduce backlogs of untested sexual assault kits. Criminal justice reform advocates hailed the announcement, saying the new guidance is a much-needed mandate.
