Trauma-Informed Domestic Violence Services

Thursday, April 18, 2013

Announcing a new resource developed by the National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health (NCDVTMH), in partnership with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV), supporting trauma-informed approaches to domestic violence service provision!

Using a trauma-informed approach has come to mean that everyone working in a service setting understands the impact of trauma in a similar way and shares certain values and goals, and that all the services and supports that are offered are designed to prevent retraumatization and to promote healing and recovery.

Combining a trauma-informed approach with a domestic violence victim advocacy perspective provides a more integrated framework for working with survivors. This framework can serve as a powerful tool for bridging perspectives and building collaboration between fields.

Trauma-Informed Domestic Violence Services (April 2013) is a new 3-part VAWnet Special Collection Series reflecting an integrated perspective that:

  • incorporates an understanding of the pervasiveness and impact of trauma,
  • supports healing and resiliency, and
  • addresses the root causes of abuse and violence.

PART 1

Understanding the Framework and Approach provides an overview of the framework and research supporting trauma-informed approaches to working with survivors and their children.
