Each year the VPC releases this report in advance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The study uses 2019 data, the most recent year for which information is available. The devastation homicide inflicts on Black teens and adults is a national crisis, yet it is all too often ignored outside of affected communities. Data analyzed in this report, although not specific to intimate partner violence, suggest that victims of attempted or completed violent crimes rarely use firearms in self-defense.

This is the fifth edition of the VPC’s American Roulette: Murder-Suicide in the United States. The study analyzes news reports of murder-suicides for the six-month period January 1, 2014 to June 30, 2014. To the VPC’s knowledge, it is the largest and most comprehensive analysis available on murder-suicide in the United States.
