Bystanders

Being an active bystander means doing something to stop dating abuse. Whether or not bystanders know the people involved, they have the power to stop abuse that is happening, intervene before abuse happens, or get help for the person being abused. Many resources throughout this collection provide information on how bystanders can play a role in preventing and responding to teen dating violence. In this section, we highlight select resources providing more in-depth discussion of bystander intervention approaches and strategies.

Red Flags on College CampusThe Red Flag Campaign: Using a “bystander intervention” strategy, this public awareness campaign encourages friends and other campus community members to “say something” when they see warning signs ("red flags") for dating violence in a friend’s relationship. This campaign is a project of the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, and was created by college students, college personnel, and community victim advocates.
