Women's Work and Selflessness

As primary caretakers of families and often communities, women frequently bear the responsibility of putting others before themselves. Additionally, often the most marginalized women—those who live in poverty, women of color, women with children, immigrant women—bear the burden of HIV. Due to poverty, lack of healthcare and often working multiple jobs to make ends meet, the women who need services too often find those services unattainable. Women respond positively to social support groups, however, many organizations do not provide women-centered services, and most do not meet other important needs of women with families—services like childcare during case management visits, food during support groups for working moms, or information on HIV and pregnancy. As a result, many women with children neglect their own treatment to care for their children, families, partners and communities.
