Trans people living at the intersections of other marginalized identities, such as immigrants, people of color, and people with disabilities, experience higher rates of violence and often face unique barriers to safety. While there are many gaps in current research, this section provides available information on the experiences of some of these multiply marginalized survivors.
Trans and non-binary people of color face many specific challenges. According to the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey: Report on the Experiences of Black Respondents, "transgender people of color who completed the survey experienced deeper and broader forms of discrimination than white USTS respondents and people in the U.S. population overall" (NCTE). Black respondents reported higher rates of sexual violence, poverty, and homelessness, as well as less comfort reaching out to police, medical professionals, and shelters (NCTE).
The TransLatin@ Coalition advocates for the unique and specific needs of Trans Latin@s who are immigrants residing in the United States. The vision of TransLatin@ Coalition is to amplify education and resources to promote the empowerment of Trans leaders.
Native Youth Sexual Health Network is an organization by and for Indigenous youth that works across issues of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice throughout the United States and Canada. NYSHN engages in Two-Spirit and LGBTQ advocacy and awareness efforts, working to fight homophobia and transphobia in order to normalize healthy sexuality. Trans Youth Equality Foundation provides education, advocacy and support for transgender and gender non-conforming children and youth and their families. They partner with families, educators, and service providers to help foster a healthy, caring, and safe environment for all transgender children.
The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging is the country's first and only technical assistance resource center aimed at improving the quality of services and supports offered to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults. They provide training, technical assistance and educational resources to aging providers, LGBT organizations and LGBT older adults.
